WHAT SETS
SMITHFIELD PHYSICAL THERAPY SPECIALISTS
APART?

INVOLVEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY

We believe in serving the community, above and beyond what we deliver in the clinic.

  • Sponsor/donor, Smithfield Packers Youth Sports and Smithfield Athletics Booster Club

  • Board of Directors, Isle of Wight County Chamber of Commerce

  • Assistance with medical coverage, Smithfield Soccer Club's Kickin' It for Cancer Tournament

  • Advisory Board past member, Luter Family YMCA

  • Executive director of the non-profit group, Smithfield Moms Collective

  • Pro bono cases for those in need in the community

INVOLVEMENT IN THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE

Our staff are active members of the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. We also have staff involved with physical therapy education, from clinical and classroom education for entry-level physical therapy students up to advanced education for licensed physical therapists seeking specialization. Staff also serve as reviewers for significant clinical journals, such as the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, to promote the publication of quality research that will guide clinical care. Additionally, we have staff holding leadership positions at a national level, such as serving as the Virginia state representative for the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy.

INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROFESSION

While specialization is not required of physical therapists, we believe in the value of specialty education and advanced training.  Our staff have pursued high levels of advanced training – from fellowship training, of which ~1% of licensed physical therapists have completed – to certification in clinical areas that often have few options available.  Our staff are also involved in things like:

  • Research publication and review

  • Teaching and instruction for doctorate students

  • Teaching and instruction for professionals' continuing education

  • Involvement with writing and publication of peer-reviewed articles

  • Leadership positions at a national level (e.g., with the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy), American Physical Therapy Association Magazine editorial advisory group member)
